A welcome from our board chair
Dear United Way donors, partners and friends – On June 7, I officially pass the gavel to my esteemed colleague, Deborah Daniels, and become United Way of Central Indiana’s past board chair. Past. Looking back on two years as the leader of United Way, I pause with wonder, awe and pride at what this organization has achieved and endured. In my first year, I took the gavel from Bryan Mills at the cusp of an unknown virus attacking our health, shaking our economy and upending our everyday lives. With extraordinary will, perseverance and an amazing community of supportive donors, partners and foundations, we fought through the hardship and created so much hope for thousands of Central Indiana families through the Central Indiana Covid-19 Community Economic Relief Fund. Then, we stayed true to course and re-imagined our purpose for the recovery of our community. As you will read about and see in this 2021-2022 annual report, United Way invested millions in grant funding to human service organizations through our basic needs, family opportunity, social innovation and sector support initiatives. We added new accredited partners to our network and strengthened our commitment to supporting organizations that are serving more diverse populations. We have created events to expand community-wide support and volunteerism. We have celebrated 15 years of the tried-and-true literacy program, ReadUP, while forming a new way for parents to have a voice in our programs through the Parent Advisory Council. As is the United Way spirit, we are purposeful in honoring our rich history while never losing sight of where we might – and could – make a significant impact on our community in the future.
Future.
There is much change – and excitement – on the horizon for United Way. With a new strategic plan in the works and a search underway for a new president and CEO to replace our beloved Ann Murtlow, I am almost envious of what Deborah Daniels and the board will inherit with this next chapter of United Way of Central Indiana. But my purpose now is clear as I step aside from my leadership role – staying active in and immensely supportive of United Way’s mission. Thank you, United Way donors, partners, volunteers and advocates. Our work is not possible without you. Your passions fuel our purpose, and that’s what makes impact possible. Sincerely, Rafael Sanchez United Way of Central Indiana, Board Chair

Our Purpose
Mission
We partner to design, support and grow systems that accelerate financial stability and upward mobility for individuals and families living in or near poverty and striving for a brighter future.
Vision
Central Indiana will be a community where children, individuals and families thrive; neighbors care for each other; and we are proud of all our residents’ quality of life.
Our Service Area
The communities of Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan and Putnam counties.
Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
We strive to maximize our impact on the community by creating and sustaining an environment that leverages the creativity and innovation that result from the unique perspectives that individuals bring.
We believe that our community is best served when diversity and inclusion are embedded in everything we do. As such, we encourage the active participation of our team, including our employees, volunteers, donors, advocates and community partners.
Diversity refers to the similarities and differences, both visible and invisible, that exist among people. Diversity includes values, beliefs, lifestyles, abilities, ethnicities, ages, genders, experiences, thinking styles, backgrounds, orientations, behaviors, cultures, socioeconomic status and the innumerable other aspects that shape an individual’s personality and unique identity. Equity is the intentional inclusion of everyone in society. Equity is achieved when systemic, institutional and historical barriers based on race, gender, sexual orientation and other identities are dismantled and no longer predict socioeconomic, education and health outcomes. Inclusion is inviting and embracing the full breadth of perspectives, fully engaging those perspectives, and leveraging them to achieve our individual and collective potential. Inclusion requires action. Inclusion is more than accommodating or allowing diversity. It is about building strength through the inherent value of diversity and seeing it as a fundamental part of all we do. It requires a focus on how each of us makes decisions and a willingness to recognize and eliminate barriers to inclusion.
Seven counties. One region.
Even before the disruptions associated with the health and economic consequences of COVID-19, more than 220,000 households in Central Indiana were living in, or one emergency away from, poverty. Poverty is a complex, stubborn problem too easily affecting one generation to the next. For most individuals and families, there’s not a quick fix, and not one organization can solve it alone. That’s where we come in. United Way is a social impact organization dedicated to fighting for the education, financial stability, health and basic needs of every person in our community. United Way of Central Indiana is proud to represent and make an impact in Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Marion, Morgan and Putnam counties. In partnership with traditional and newly partnered community-based organizations, United Way invests to respond to our community’s most immediate needs, provide the necessities to stabilize individuals in crisis, improve the education and upward economic mobility of a whole family, create innovative solutions to disrupt generational poverty and dismantle the systems that grow, or perpetuate, racial inequity in our community – all while connecting donors to specific causes they’re passionate about.
