Meridian Society
(Donations of $25,000 – $999,999)
Named after one of our community’s most iconic streets and main thoroughfares, the Meridian Society is a collection of those who are recognized easily for their individual contributions to Central Indiana – but when joined together, their investment, leadership and passion for positive change helps guide and make possible the work of United Way of Central Indiana.

Donor spotlight
Don Knebel
The work and volunteerism of Don Knebel’s parents made an impression on him from an early age. His father was a longtime township trustee in Star City, Indiana, responsible for what was then called “poor relief,” assisting those in need. Both his parents were named senior citizen of the year in the county, and his mother was a finalist for senior citizen of the year for the entire state. Their work instilled in him a sense of obligation to help others, a requirement that’s “just a part of being alive,” Knebel said. “I was inspired by their example to do something for the community,” he said. An electrical engineer turned lawyer, Knebel worked for 39 years with Barnes & Thornburg LLP as an intellectual property and antitrust litigator. He retired in 2013, but not one to sit still, he currently teaches at the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and writes a travel column for the Current newspapers, among other things. Over the years, he’s held numerous roles with United Way of Central Indiana: Tocqueville Society chair, 2010 campaign chair, board member for a decade – and a founder of the Meridian Society. Knebel’s relationship with United Way began as it does for many: His law firm ran a fundraising campaign. But as he became more involved, he saw United Way’s impact in action. “The more I got to know what was going on, the more I saw that this is really an important part of this community,” he said. In anticipation of the 2010 campaign, Knebel traveled to a national meeting for United Way campaign chairs in Dallas, he said. At the time, United Way of Central Indiana didn’t have a way to recognize donors who made gifts above the Tocqueville Society level but below the Million Dollar Roundtable.
At the conference, Knebel learned that the United Way in Dallas had a recognition level for donors who gave $25,000. To Knebel, that was important: It gave people an incentive to give at a higher level, he said.
So when those in attendance at the conference were asked to share what they wanted to do with their campaign, Knebel said he wanted to establish a $25,000 giving level.
That’s how United Way of Central Indiana’s Meridian Society was born.
Knebel began talking with local United Way leaders about what they might call it. They wanted something that suggested Indianapolis, centrality, high quality. Meridian Street – the city’s central avenue, where the governor’s residence is located – evoked all of that, Knebel said.
With the Meridian Society, Knebel wanted to create unique experiences that members couldn’t buy or find elsewhere, he said. Some of the early events included a private performance by Michael Feinstein at the Booth Tarkington Civic Theatre in Carmel and a gathering at Christel DeHaan’s home, during which opera singer Sylvia McNair played the fiddle.
Knebel also envisioned the Meridian Society as a networking opportunity and motivational experience, a chance to meet people in the community who “make important things happen,” whose names you’d probably heard but with whom you hadn’t yet had a chance to socialize.
“If you can meet with other people in the community who you’ve heard about, it inspires you to do the kind of good things that you know they’re doing,” he said.
When it comes to United Way’s mission, education initiatives speak most to Knebel – particularly improving child care standards and advancing high-quality pre-K.
Knebel’s high school was small, about 30 people in his graduating class. He said he knew his way out of a small-town environment was through education. He went on to get his bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Purdue University and his law degree from Harvard Law School.
“Education is exactly what made me who I am,” he said.
